The intuitive responses to a space, whether practical, emotional or phenomenological are prompted by many questions located before the ‘Ask the Space’ workshop begins and answered by participants as they explore.
Ask the Space process encourages the community to circulate in the space and explore. Often when confronted with a new space people tend to stay near the door or find a corner to hide in.
The process is not directed, in the sense that the community is allowed to respond at will, without pressure. Likewise the pressure of having to respond verbally within a group is avoided, the responses can be anonymous, and little or no response is fine.
Opening up a dialogue between the community and the space is a crucial part of the codesign process. This relationship forms the basis of ownership that the community will begin to feel towards a space.
